Our Leadership Team

Mr. Mike Livingston

Director

BEd, University of Regina. MEd, Michigan State University. Graduate work on Doctorate of Education at the University of Calgary.

Mr. Livingston is in his 4th year as the Director at YIS. Originally from Canada, he has served as a teacher and school leader in international schools in Asia, Africa, and South America.

Mrs. Heather Kissack

Elementary Principal

H.Dip.Ed, Wits University. MEd,College of New Jersey, USA.

Having taught in South Africa in public and private schools, as well as 2 International schools, Ms. Kissack has accrued 35 years in education in many roles, including almost 10 years in leadership in Elementary education.

Dr. Hugh Schoolman

Secondary Principal

B.A., Yale University (Philosophy). M.Ed., University of Florida, and Ed.D. (Doctorate in Education), University of Florida.

Dr. Schoolman has served as a faculty member and school leader in independent schools in New York and the Southeastern USA, as well as in international schools in Europe and Latin America.

MISSION

YIS is a network of college preparatory schools that seeks to foster the development of the whole child, who is a participating global citizen and lifelong learner: one who is academically well-prepared, socially responsible, culturally sensitive, and personally fulfilled.

Our School

Established in 2004, YIS is well-established as a top school in Yangon and in Myanmar. We count 268 alumni graduates among our success stories!

Individualized Learning

Students, teachers, and parents work together to support the unique development of each child using a holistic approach. Growth is the goal.

Global Community

Our families, faculty, and alumni represent more than 25 nationalities and dozens of ethnic groups within the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

Student Services

Support includes guidance counselors for social and emotional needs, a team of English as an Additional Language (EAL) specialists, and a college counselor.

Student Activities and Athletics

From Lower Elementary to High School, our students have opportunities to enrich their learning through clubs, After School Activities, sports teams, leadership, and service.

University Placement

YIS graduates have been offered acceptance to more than 200 universities around the world, including in the USA, UK, EU, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Australia, India, Canada, and Hong Kong. Others have entered military service or taken gap years to volunteer or do internships.

2005

2004-2005

Yangon International School is founded by U Tin Maung Win and his family under ILBC. ILBC and YIS become the largest educational provider in Myanmar next to the government, preparing students to be leaders and citizens ready for the future.

2009

2008-2009

YIS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In 2009, the first graduating class leaves YIS and Myanmar for universities in the United States, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

2015

2014-2015

YIS celebrates its 10th anniversary and is re-accredited by WASC. The Lower Elementary Campus opens in the fall of 2015, serving students in Early Childhood to Grade 2.

2020

2019-2020

The new middle school annex opens at the Main Campus, giving Grade 6-8 students their own space. YIS announces plans to build a state-of-the-art, future-ready campus two kilometers from the current school buildings. The school begins to prepare to seek IB DP authorization.

2021

2020-2021

YIS is proud to now be recognized as an IB world school. The school received accreditation from IB, for their Diploma Programme, in June 2020 and the first batch of DP students is currently in Grade 11.
