Hello to All!
I am completing my tenth year at YIS. I am so pleased to have witnessed the growth of YIS through the years. Since my arrival, the school has grown to 565 students. We have added the high school program, new buildings, and as of this year, a nearby early childhood campus. Each year has been a year of growth and change and this is what keeps the school exciting and vibrant.
I am originally from Iowa in the United States. I taught social studies and reading at two school systems. Since Iowa, I have taught at the Cairo American College in Egypt for six years. I taught at the American School of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for 21 years. While there, I was a middle school and high school principal. I am now enjoying my time as Director of YIS.
I have a BA degree in social studies, an MA degree in Reading, an EdS degree in Curriculum and completed my administrative credentials.
I am married to Mrs. Von (Melanie) and we recently celebrated our 40th anniversary! We have two sons – Jonah is living with his family in Seattle, Washington and Adam is living in Kansas City with his wife.
I am so happy to be in Myanmar to witness all of the recent changes and developments. I enjoy working with the staff, teachers, students, and parents.

Greetings and Mingalabar!
While it might be presumptuous of me in my first year at Yangon International School to welcome everyone to our school, I certainly will share that I welcome our Secondary School students every morning! I try to say hi as they come into the building (one of my favorite times of the day), and that usually gets me started on a very positive note. It’s my sincere pleasure to be working with your children, our students at YIS.
I come to YIS with twenty-seven years of overseas experience in administration, as both a principal and as a director of student activities. With my wife, Karen (Grade 3C), I have had the privilege of working at American Embassy School New Delhi, Taipei American School, International School of Prague, and International School of Beijing. During those years we raised our two sons, Erik and Brad, who graduated from ISB in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Certainly our twenty consecutive years as international school parents gives us our most valuable experience as we begin our time here in Yangon.
Originally from Saskatchewan, Canada, I come to Yangon International School with more than 20 years of teaching and administrative experience. I have always had a passion for learning and this led to my decision to pursue career in education. At the University of Alberta, Canada I obtained a Bachelor’s of Education degree with a focus on literacy learning. After teaching for a few years in Alberta, my husband Bruno and I decided to take our young family abroad and embarked upon a career in international education. Our two children, Shayne and Dayle were raised abroad. They are products of international schools and are now international school teachers themselves.
My international school experiences have taken me to four continents. I cherish my experiences working and learning at Lahore American School Pakistan, Escuela Bella Vista Venezuela, International School of Dakar Senegal and the American International School of Abuja. While working abroad, I obtained two masters degrees. The first, a Master’s of Education in International Education from Framingham State University, MA. Followed by a Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership from Lehigh University, PA. My journey in education has brought me to Yangon. YIS is a vibrant school, with its talented teachers, motivated students and supportive parent community. I am very proud to be part of this learning organization.
