The secondary guidance counselor at YIS serves students in grades 6-12. Although primarily a resource for students, the counselor also works with teachers and parents to help students be successful. The guidance counselor assists with academic difficulties, social problems, course selection and college advising. Some limited social and emotional counseling is available as well. The counselor can provide referrals for students and families when ongoing therapeutic intervention may be appropriate.
The secondary guidance counselor teaches a required College and Career class for grade 12 students, a yearlong half block class which focuses on searching for and applying to colleges first semester and then students do career research second semester, as well as talking about transition to college.
